About This Place

Located in the vibrant heart of Houston’s Montrose neighborhood, The Gypsy Poet is a must-visit destination for pizza lovers seeking a fresh, artisan twist on this beloved classic. This dynamic pizza restaurant, also doubling as a lively beer hall and wine bar, offers an inviting blend of rustic charm and urban energy. Whether you're dropping by for a casual lunch, picking up a takeaway, or grabbing a late-night delivery, The Gypsy Poet has crafted an exceptional menu that balances creativity and comfort.

The cuisine here is rooted firmly in wood-fired, brick-oven pizza artistry, which is evident in each perfectly blistered crust—thin, crispy, with just the right charred edges that add an irresistible smoky crunch. Standout pizzas include the Pepperoni Madness, layered with generous pepperoni slices and a surprising drizzle of hot honey that awakens the palate with a subtle sweet heat. For those seeking more complex flavors, the Dream Catcher offers a sophisticated medley of truffle oil, goat cheese, fresh mozzarella, and cherry tomatoes, bringing a velvety richness tempered by bright bursts of freshness.

Vegetarian and vegan diners are not left wanting here, as options like the Cappellone Big Hat delight with portobello mushrooms, shallots, and Italian sausage – which can be adapted for vegan preferences – all under a lush blanket of fior di latte and mozzarella. The Sicilian Journey, a white pizza variation that intrigues with its unique flavor profile, adds further depth to the menu. Salads such as the Portobello Salad, combining wood-fired mushrooms, arugula, goat cheese, and a house vinaigrette, provide refreshing, balanced accompaniments that cleanse the palate and satisfy the health-conscious.

Dessert is not an afterthought at The Gypsy Poet, where the Nutella Confezione reigns supreme. Served in ample 9-inch or indulgent 13-inch sizes, this sweet, warm crepe-like delight oozes with creamy Nutella, perfectly ending the meal on a rich, decadent note. The Tiramisu, with its delicate layers and authentic Italian flair, is another favorite that guests rave about.

The atmosphere exudes a welcoming, creative vibe with a lively crowd. Guests consistently mention the energy brought by live DJs spinning tunes that perfectly complement the convivial spirit, making The Gypsy Poet an ideal spot not only for family dinners and casual dates but also for vibrant nights out with friends. Seating is ample, and the communal tables encourage a friendly, social environment. Small thoughtful gestures, such as providing fresh cheese slices and red pepper flakes on the side, highlight the brand’s attention to detail and commitment to enhancing every bite.

Customer experiences echo the authenticity and quality here. Amber Tran describes The Gypsy Poet as a fantastic nightlife venue with great artisan pizza, while Patrick Zajac highlights the expertly crisp crust and balanced truffle notes. Aime Aguilar appreciates the fresh, eco-friendly sides served alongside the pizzas, emphasizing the place’s charm and perfect hangout vibe. Even first-time visitors like arianny diaz recognize the quality of the wood-fired process, vegan and gluten-free inclusivity, and a pleasant atmosphere, though some feel there’s room to elevate the uniqueness further.

Overall, The Gypsy Poet stands out in Houston’s bustling culinary scene by marrying craftsmanship, innovative flavors, and a spirited ambiance. Whether your craving is a classic pepperoni slice or an adventurous truffle-infused pie, this restaurant promises a memorable experience that satisfies both your taste buds and your social soul.

This place has great artisan pizza along with a lively environment to complement it! We ordered the Fancy Backpacker which was delicious. They gave us fresh slices of cheese and red pepper flakes to use at our will which was a nice plus. There was a DJ playing live music when we visited which really added to the atmosphere. Overall fantastic place to have dinner with friends or to visit for a night out! We’d love to come visit again to try out the other pizza options.

The food was amazing! We had the Pepperoni pizza and both desserts, it was all sooo good. The place is super cute, perfect to hang out with family, friends or have a casual date. I love that they give the sides next to the pizza, it tastes really fresh and I think is ecofriendly which it’s a great detail

Food was delicious! Line was out the door so I know I was in for a treat! They had live dj playing music. Inside had a good amount of seating. The selection of different pizzas and salad was great. Pizzas were absolutely delicious! Yum yum yum. Would definitely come back again.

First time at the hyped Gypsy Poet. We got the margherita “the queen” and paid about 17 bucks. It was good but truly nothing extraordinary. There is certainly better pizza in the city. I like that the use a brick oven pizza and make every pizza to order. they have vegetarian, vegan and gluten free friendliness— but again it’s nothing special here. As far as the atmosphere, I enjoyed it, it could be a nice hangout spot. I would see myself enjoying the weather outside in the warm weather. Parking is $5 unless you find somewhere to park alongside the street!

They make a mean pizza here at Gypsy Poet I actually loved it here. Crust is like so thin and crispy and I love the char on the edges. I got the Dream Catcher which was delish, truffle flavor wasnt too overpowering, and I loooove goat cheese so having that on a pizza was awesome. Tried some of my friend’s Pepperoni Madness which was good as well.

Food always deliver's!! They make great wood oven pizzas. This place is a hidden gem, that's tucked away in downtown Houston. Came during Christmas and they even had home alone playing.
